How to Determine the Different Types of Brake Rotor Damage Modes

The first type of damage that may occur as it relates to the brake rotors is rusting. You should understand that when it comes to brake rotors, the most component material used in their creation is cast iron. Naturally, over time, rust may develop. This is especially true in a vehicle that sits for an extended amount of time, and not so much in vehicles that run on a regular basis.
 
The second type of damage directly related to brake rotors is warping. Ultimately, an extreme amount of heat causes this type of situation to occur. There are many reasons why heat levels may increase to reach this particular state. This heat may be induced from consistently pressing on the brakes, braking on a regular yet unnecessary level, racing, having rotors that are not the right size for the vehicle and more.
 
Cracking is another type of brake rotor damage mode that can be troublesome for the owner of an automobile. If the rotors have been drilled, then it is likely that cracking will occur around the area, or even in the area of the bolts. Unfortunately, with this type of issue, the rotors must be replaced and not just sealed.
 
Scarring is the process in which the brake pad becomes worn to the point in which metal is touching metal. This issue can result in scratching, and other types of damage As a result, this can result in deep intrusions on the brake pads. Now, if this happens, it can be repaired. The repair process simply involves taking a special machine and rubbing it down to the point where the scarring is gone. Unfortunately, this can only occur a set number of times.
 
If you start to have difficulties with your brakes, the best thing to do is to take your car to a mechanic to determine the cause of damage that is occurring with the brake rotors.
